Pax vs Momentum: an honest comparison
Both put a calm photo on every new tab. Here’s where they differ: calendars, what’s free, faith, languages and privacy.
Momentum and Pax look alike at first: a photo, a big clock, a greeting. Spend a day with each and they feel quite different. Here’s a fair side-by-side, with Momentum’s details taken from its own site.
In short
- Calendar: Pax reads Google, iCloud, Outlook, CalDAV and .ics. Momentum lists Google and Outlook.
- Free tools: the focus timer, sounds, notes and world clocks are free in Pax and part of Momentum Plus.
- Only in Pax: prayer times for six faiths, twelve languages with right-to-left layouts, and live scores and markets.
- Only in Momentum: Safari and an iOS app, and integrations with to-do apps like Asana, Trello and ClickUp.
The calendar
This is the biggest difference. Pax treats the calendar as the heart of the page: a glass agenda on the dashboard, a full day, week and month view one keypress away, and an event you can add by typing it the way you’d say it, like “Lunch with Sara Thursday 1pm”. It reads Google, iCloud, Outlook, any CalDAV server and any .ics link at once. Multi-day events show correctly on every day they cover.
Momentum’s free plan connects your Google or Outlook calendar and shows what’s next. If you use iCloud, or a work calendar on a CalDAV server, Pax is the one that can show it.
Reminders that don’t shout
In Pax, when a meeting is close, a single line appears in your agenda with Join and Snooze. A task with a due time does the same, with a box to tick it off. There’s no sound and no pile of pop-ups, which matters when Microsoft’s 2025 research found the busiest workers get a ping every two minutes.

Faith and languages
Pax works out prayer times from where you are for Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism, and shows a short passage from each tradition’s own texts. It speaks twelve languages, with Arabic and Urdu laid out right to left. Momentum doesn’t have a faith feature.
Looks
Both are calm by default. Pax adds a few touches for people who want even less on screen: Zen mode keeps only the clock and the photo, frosted glass softens a busy picture, and the search bar can hide until you point at it. There are eight hand-picked typefaces, each with a matching text face.
Privacy
Neither needs an account for the free version. In Pax, your to-dos, notes, habits and settings live in your browser. If you choose Plus sync, they go through a private folder in your own Google Drive that only Pax can open, so none of it is stored on our servers.
Where Momentum is the better pick
Momentum runs in Safari and has an iOS app, and Pax doesn’t yet. Momentum Plus also connects to many to-do apps, including Asana, Basecamp, Trello and ClickUp; Pax connects to Google Tasks, Todoist and Notion. If those matter most to you, Momentum is a good choice.
